THE SCOREBOARD – THE COMPASS TO A SOLID BUSINESS

  • by

In my practice with entrepreneurs, I noticed that two of the biggest challenges they deal with are the following:

  • control / delegation of tasks to the team
  • cash (treasury)

The solution I recommend is the Scoreboard. What does a Scoreboard mean?

  • It is a set of key indicators measuring past performance and estimating future performance.
  • It includes both financial and non-financial indicators. For instance, a Scoreboard should include profitability by business lines, by product classes, sales agents, etc., cost analysis, treasury analysis and the fiscal part, taxes, as well as such things as the conversion rate, the average collection and payment period, duration of the sales process.

A Scoreboard is built by entrepreneurs and their teams, with the help of business consultants, and it is implemented/automated to the largest extent possible, depending on the organisation available systems.

Why is the is the Scoreboard the answer to the 2 challenges mentioned at the beginning of this article?

  • The Scoreboard helps entrepreneurs/ the management keep up to date with the evolution of the operational part, without any need on their part to be involved in operational activities on an ongoing basis, thus having the possibility to distance themselves so as to be able to handle the business strategy and development.
  • Regularly updated treasury forecasts help prevent gaps in the current activity.

How can a Scoreboard be built?

As a consultant, I help entrepreneurs build highly performing organisational structures. The following are the main stages of this type of project:

  1. Accurate and deep understanding of the business
  2. Drawing up the operational Scoreboard based on which entrepreneurs stay in touch with the daily activity
  3. Automating (semi-automating) this Scoreboard
  4. Documenting and delivering training for the project responsible
  5. Providing assistance with implementation.

Thus, entrepreneurs can rely on us as partners in building the business and delegate staff to us for the largest part of the project, to step up for validation.

As part of these projects, the entrepreneurs’ benefits are multiple: firstly, their time is dedicated to valuable and strategic activities generating sales and profit; secondly, organisations grow. As part of this process, entrepreneurs transfer part of their tasks to their teams, and the delegation process is assisted by consultants.
